This was a 2/3 week unit before our residential and an introduction to the Integrated Learning Unit, On Your Doorstep. Stimulated by an understanding of the West Waterlooville Development, the children were challenged to create a design of a landmark town centre focussed upon the properties of different 2D & 3D shapes. Having explored the properties of 3D shapes, constructed shapes from nets, created scale drawings of their plans and completed calculations of area, the children created a 3D model of their town.
Learning targets for maths :
applied learning: properties and identification of regular and irregular 2D shapes; approximation and calculation of area and perimeter: co-ordinates; conversion of km/m
new learning: properties of 3D shapes; make and visualise nets; Y6 problem solving process; scale; conversion of km/miles
